Integrated Pollution Prevention Control (IPPC)

In 1990s the EPA began licensing activities in the large scale industrial and agriculture sectors which may or may not have been causing damage to the environment.  This licensing programme , derived from the EPA Act 1992 was known as Integrated Pollution Prevention Control (IPPC).  The Act was subsequently amended in 2003 by the Protection of the Environment Act, 2003 which gave effect to the Intergrated Pollution Prevention Control (IPPC) Directive.  Presently in Ireland there are over 200 companies/facilities with IPPC licences and this number is growing.  An IPPC licence consists of a full programme of environmental monitoring procedures that the activity must carry out.
