MtBE (September 2008)

MtBE (or methyl tertiary-butyl ether) is produced almost exclusively for use in petrol as an engine anti-knocking agent to replace lead. Although it is not classified as a carcinogen, MtBE does carry with it serious non-cancerous health risks. There is a possibility for MtBE to escape into the environment wherever it is stored or transported. Due to its high solubility in water, it can migrate faster than other dangerous compounds found in petrol, such as BTEX. Therefore its presence is of particular concern in surface and drinking waters. The EPA has issued advice those concentrations lower than 40 ppb in drinking waters would not result in negative health effects. Our current limit of detection for MtBE is 1 ppb.
