The HSA Programme of Work 2008 booklet highlights the strategy set out by the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) to aid Health and Safety in the workplace.
This namely involves identifying sectors where risks are highest.
This will involve the implementation of a comprehensive programme to update and simplify occupational health and safety legislation currently in use.
At the moment there are approximately four inspectors per 100,000 workers so the Authority must target most of its inspections at higher risk sectors.
In 2008, the HSA propose to conduct 17,500 inspections of workplaces.
This will be on both a targeted and random basis.
Inspections will take place as follows:
On the occupational side of things, the Authority will also actively monitor atmospheres in workplaces for chemical contaminants such as harmful dusts and fumes.
They will also prioritise, for example, the monitoring of silica and other dusts in quarries as well as monitoring different types of fumes in workshops. The Authority has also taken it upon itself to conduct up to 500 noise inspections over the course of 2008.
They will also carry out up to 700 chemical related inspections in companies which deal with chemicals, both in manufacturing and supplying.
