THOUSANDS of worried homeowners are having water supplies tested independently after a series of contamination scares over the past year.
Testing companies have reported a boom in business since the latest water scares which saw drinking water supplies around the country contaminated with lead, cryptosporidium and arsenic.
And while sales have been brisk since the five-month long cryptosporidium contamination in Galway last year, news that parts of the city's water supply are now showing high levels of lead has pushed demand for private testing higher.
EURO Environmental Services, based in Drogheda in Co Louth, tests water quality for local authorities, hotels, nursing homes and other private businesses and, increasingly, for private homeowners. Its calls have increased five-fold since the
"When these stories hit the news the calls rocket," said spokesperson Sarah Gardiner.
She said the company's accredited laboratory was now testing a number of homes for the presence of lead and arsenic in their water supplies. People who are on a group water scheme or use a private well are recommended to have their water tested regularly while those on mains water are advised to contact their local authority if they are worried.
