29% of Irish rivers polluted: EPA (November 2008)

The Government will have to introduce extensive new measures to improve water quality if Ireland is to comply with a strict new EU directive.   The warning comes from the Environmental Protection Agency, which found nearly 30% of Irish rivers are polluted and half of groundwater samples were contaminated with human or animal sewage.

The data contained in the EPA's three-year report, comes from an examination of more than 1,500 rivers and nearly 450 lakes.   There has been an overall improvement in water quality, but 29% of river length is still polluted, and 66 lakes have an unsatisfactory quality.

The identified culprits are municipal waste treatment plants, which need to be upgraded, and agricultural run-off, which needs to be eliminated through the full implementation of the nitrates directive.

EPA Director Larry Stapleton said Ireland will not achieve the strict EU Water Framework Directive, which comes into force in 2015, unless extensive measures are undertaken.

Minister for the Environment John Gormley welcomed the progress, but stressed more needs to be done. He said he hoped a record budget for water services will have an impact.
